The first thing you need is a ws_ftp
You can get a free one from here...

 To Learn how to use it, you can follow instructions from here

If you do not have a zip file to unzip it.. You can
download zipcentral from here, free...

Once it is downloaded and unzipped you can read the tutorial
from here....

For a quick overview of your ws_ftp go to Click Here

Check your computer for frontpage express that most new ones have
installed.  Go to start>programs>accessories>internet tools> frontpage express

Or you can  download netscape composer 4.76 to 4.78 for learning.
You can get that here

If you decided to use the netscape composer,
 you can still use internet explorer as your main default browser.

WE cannot just download the composer only... It is too bad, but you need to download
the whole netscape to use the composer.. Do not get the 6.0 Version because the
editor is harder.  We need to use the older version.

Okay, NEXT you need to find a template that you would like to use.
You can use the templates they offer in netscape composer, but you will
probably like one of these. 

Go to www.freesitetemplates.com

You will download a zipped file with your new template. Try to find an easy one.
The ones with images that need you to make the buttons are too hard for now,
but later you can do that, too. Pick one that does not have buttons or has buttons
that are ready made.

New freesitetemplates now has a video tutorial free to use to learn
how to set up your templates, and use various tools.

Okay here we go..... Quick instructions for both netscape composer
and for frontpage express * Please note these are both free html
editors and are basically fairly easy to learn.  Should you want to
buy frontpage2000 or some other editor that is up to you.

Building Your Page the Easy Way With Netscape Composer
 

You need to know how to make a special folder for your work area.
Go here to learn how to make a folder
Make sure your download for a template is in the folder.
Open the template.... now saveas and name it practice.html
and make sure it goes to the designated folder that you just made.

If netscape is your default browser... Go to your folder and
and double click on your practice.html It will open up.
You now go to file top left hand corner and scroll down for
edit page.  You will see your page in a new light, edit mode
and you can start playing around with the html editor.

If netscape is not your default browser.  Go to start> programs>
netscape communicator>netscape composer  - When that opens
to to file top left hand side and click on open.  Then browse
to where you have your template on your harddrive.  When
you find it, say open.

USING your  Wsftp and load your page to your server. 

When you open your wsftp and log in you will come to a two
sided box.  The left side is your harddrive the right side is the 
server side.

On most servers you will a yellow directory folder  and
you will see yoursite-www, or www or public_html
depending on your server.

When you double click on the correct folder you come into another
area of the server and you will usually see another yellow folder
that says cgi-bin (and that is usually one way to know you are in the
right area)

OKAY NOW,
highlight practice.html which you will find on the left hand side,
by browsing using the green arrow to find where you put your
practice.html page.

Use the middle arrow on the software and watch it go to the server.
It makes a loud noise. IF IT says "oh oh" sound, it means that your
wsftp has disconnected from the server and you need to connect it again.

These are the things you need to build your web pages.

1.) Download a wsftp from here then read the directions on how
to use the wsftp for loading pages to your server.from here...

2.) Go here and pick out a template that you like.

3.) Download your template.  If it is zipped... Get a 
zip utility from here if you do not already have one.
 here, free..

NEXT shut out all your Internet Explorer Browsers you may have
open.. And find netscape composer and open it up. 

NEXT type in your domain name.com/practice.html
YOUR template will show.

NEXT Go to File.......top left in your browser (netscape)
and see where it says edit page.....  A new view of your page
will show up...
YOU are now in Edit mode.

Type some words in... then  go to file and choose saveas

Saveas practice.html and send it to your server with your wsftp
NOW type in your url  yourdomain.com/practice.html
reload............and see your new page with the changes.

Now, that you know where and how to edit your page...Edit some
more and practice playing with the buttons.
You will find...  Font sizes, colors, links, Bold Italize 
add images. etc.    Just play around... after about 8 minutes,
go to file and saveas. (make sure you saveas in the folder you
have made for your pages.
save as...... and continue working on your page...
after you save as you can also preview the page....

Soon you will know a lot.

Or get your frontpage express, as mentioned above.
Go to start>programs>accessories>internet tools> frontpage express

You can open your frontpage express, and browse for your folder/
your page practice.html and play with that editor.
 

NOW somewhere along the line you are going to want to copy and
paste some html code in........ well, you can't copy and paste
into these editors.. but you can still do this:

The easy way is type in COPY AND PASTE HERE.. where you want the
code to show on your page in edit mode.
Then saveas.
NEXT go to your WSFTP find your file... highlight it then find
the place on the gray area of your wsftp software that says 
view..........View it..... YOU Will see all the raw html code.

Now at the top you will see the word search... Search for
COPY AND PASTE HERE... and presto it will show you the spot.
paste your html in..... erase the copy and paste here....
Go to file and save as.... (making sure it goes to where you 
are working on it) now go back to your page you were editing and a
 warning will pop up....  "This page has been changed, do you want to 
see the changes?"  And you say yes.
And you will see where your code went in.
Save as.......... and preview it.. When you are done...... 
Load it over to your server and then type in your url. RELOAD
and see the changes....

Now, you can learn by practicing different things. Good Luck.

Extra Secrets
Always name your pages in lowercase for now. 
Always put them together as one word such as  namethispage.html
do not put it as "name this page.html" IT WILL NOT work.

Always load your jpg gif pdf and exe files in Binary mode.

To link to your gifs and your downloads is easy.
yoursite.com/nameofimage.jpg 

Picture your www as your livingroom door.
Double click on www and you will see a folder called cgi-bin and
stats.. pretend those are doorways to rooms in your house.

So... double click on www you are now in your living room.
Everything you put in your living room is linked by its file name.
Suppose we have a webpage we have named table. html

To get the table we go yoursite.com/table.html

Suppose we need to make a new doorway to say the bedroom.
We make a directory called bedroom
We double click on the bedroom and then send a file called dresser.jpg
into the bedoom.

To get to that file  we have to go yoursite.com/bedroom/dresser.jpg

Suppose we put a free ebook in the bedroom.

We go to yoursite.com/bedroom/freebook.exe

And that is basically how links work.
